The Public Investment Fund (PIF) has allocated USD 19.4 billion for sustainability-centered projects in line with the Vision 2030 plan, aimed at diversifying and modernizing the Saudi economy.
Green Saudi Arabia
The kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund has channeled USD 5.2 billion out of the USD 8.5 billion it has raised through green bond issuances toward environmental projects as of last June, PIF noted in the second edition of its “Allocation and Impact Report,” released on Friday.
The amount invested marks a significant increase from the USD 1.3 billion allocated in June of the previous year.
Claps Class
Green bonds are a type of debt instrument used to finance projects that have substantial environmental impact.
In October 2022, PIF made history not only by issuing the first green bond coming from a sovereign wealth fund but also by issuing one of a 100-year tenor.
PIF issued a USD 3 billion, multi-tranche green bond at the time.
A second USD 5.5 billion issuance followed this in February of 2023.
These issuances aim to diversify the fund’s sources of financing and allocate “green investments” that will positively impact the country’s economy.
So what
The PIF, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world, notes that its “green allocations” support investments in renewable energy projects, green buildings, and sustainable water management ventures.
These efforts are part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which aims to reduce the country’s economic reliance on oil and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
Some context
In its report, PIF, which manages assets valued at approximately USD 925 billion, spotlighted a water repurposing project planned for the mega “NEOM” area.
This project will see the development of a circular system aimed at recycling 100% of wastewater in an energy-neutral manner.
The report also noted a focus on green hydrogen, which many industry experts see as playing a “vital role” in the transition to clean power sources.
The green hydrogen project in “NEOM” will be the largest facility in the world once operational, and will be fully powered by renewable energy.
