The Clap:
The Infinity Power-Hassan Allam Utilities-Masdar consortium co-developing a USD 10 billion wind power project in Sohag will postpone the construction date of their project to March 2026 on the back of land acquisition difficulties, Infinity Power Chair Mohamed Mansour said in an interview with Bloomberg.
Remember:
The land access agreement for 3,000 sq km in West Sohag was sealed in May after the land acquisition pact was inked in June 2023.
The new timeline:
The consortium — which is currently undertaking wind speed and other — surveys now expects electricity generation for the project to commence as early as 2032.
Why this matters:
The wind farm, planned to be one of the biggest in the world and the largest in Africa, is expected to reduce Egypt’s overall carbon emissions by up to 10%, leading to annual savings of around USD 5 billion by reducing dependency on natural gas.
All part of Egypt’s renewables push:
Egypt wants renewables to account for 42% of the national energy mix by 2030, and is targeting a 58% share by 2040.
